Challenges and Opportunities of Education in Kigoma region

The education sector in Kigoma region is facing several challenges that affect the quality and balance of learning outcomes for students in the region. Some of those challenges are:

Lack of sufficient infrastructure and equipment

Many schools in Kigoma region do not have basic equipment such as classrooms, desks, chairs, toilets, water and electricity. Some schools also do not have enough teaching and learning materials, such as books, notebooks, pens and chalk. These conditions create a poor learning environment for students and teachers, affecting their morale and performance1.

Shortage and poor quality of teachers

Kigoma has a great need for teachers with qualifications and abilities, especially for secondary and higher education. However, the region is facing a shortage of teachers especially for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. In addition, many teachers in Kigoma region have low levels of teaching skills and subject knowledge, and they do not receive enough training and support to improve their performance2.

Low enrollment and retention rates

Kigoma has a low enrollment rate in secondary education, especially for girls. According to the Basic Education Statistics in Tanzania (BEST) for the year 2019, only 46.8% of children graduated from secondary education in Kigoma region, compared to the national average of 58.4%. The enrollment rate for girls was even lower, at 43.6%, compared to 50% for boys3.

In addition, many students in Kigoma region leave school before completing secondary education due to various reasons such as poverty, early marriage, pregnancy, child labor and poor academic performance.

Despite these challenges, the education sector in Kigoma region also has some opportunities that can be used to improve the quality and balance of learning outcomes for students in the region. Some of those opportunities are:

Support from the government and development partners

The Tanzanian government has shown a sincere commitment to improve the education sector in the country, by increasing the budget allocation, implementing various policies and programs, and providing free and compulsory basic education for all children. The government has also collaborated with various development partners, such as the World Bank, UNICEF, USAID and GPE, to support the education sector in Kigoma region and other regions, by providing financial and technical assistance, capacity building and innovation.
