Equivalent Entry: This pathway caters to individuals who possess alternative qualifications, such as diplomas, that are deemed comparable to high school completion. These applicants must also meet certain academic standards to be considered for admission.
By fully understanding these entry requirements, prospective students can adequately prepare and increase their chances of being admitted to UDSM. The following sections of this article will cover the specifics of each entry route, providing detailed information on the qualifications and criteria required for a successful application.

To become a student at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), finishing high school with good grades is essential. Strong results in NECTA Form Four exams (CSEE) are also necessary. For those interested in a bachelor’s degree, passing three subjects in Form Six (ACSEE) is generally required. Three of these subjects must be at a credit level.
Certain courses, such as medicine and engineering, may require even higher grades, specifically Division One or Two. For those pursuing a master’s degree or PhD, a well-regarded bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by UDSM is necessary.
Applicants who meet these criteria can apply online through the UDSM website: www.udsm.ac.tz. It’s important to be aware that admission to UDSM is highly competitive, and outstanding academic performance is crucial for securing a place.
UDSM Direct Entry Requirements
To be eligible for Direct Entry into UDSM, applicants must have achieved specific results in their Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (ACSEE) exams, or an equivalent qualification.
The minimum requirement includes having two principal passes in relevant subjects. These passes must be in subjects that align with the chosen course of study. For instance, a student applying for a science-based program would need principal passes in science subjects.
In addition to the principal passes, the applicant’s overall performance in three subjects is also considered. This is calculated using a point system based on the grades achieved:
A = 5 points
B = 4 points
C = 3 points
D = 2 points
E = 1 point
S = 0.5 points
F = 0 points
For arts programs, the total points from the three subjects must not be less than 5. For science-based programs, the total points must not be less than 4. The minimum grade considered as a principal pass is ‘D’.
UDSM Equivalent Entry Qualifications
Applicants who do not meet the Direct Entry requirements can still be considered for admission through Equivalent Entry. This pathway is for individuals who hold diplomas or other qualifications recognized as comparable to the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education.
To be eligible for Equivalent Entry, applicants must have obtained a diploma of at least Second Class/Credit level or a B grade average. The diploma must be from a college fully registered by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) and approved by the UDSM Senate.
For diplomas that are further classified into Upper and Lower Second Class, the requirement is an Upper Second Class or a B+ average.
International students from countries that follow an 8-4-4 education system must complete at least one year of university study in their home country before they can be considered for admission to UDSM.
It’s important to note that not all diplomas or qualifications will be considered equivalent. The UDSM Senate has the authority to determine which qualifications are acceptable. Applicants are encouraged to consult the UDSM website or contact the admissions office directly to confirm the eligibility of their qualifications.
