The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest and most popular public university in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres at the Observation Hill, and 13 kilometers from the City Centre.

It was established on 1st July, 1970, through the Act No. 12 of the Parliament of 1970. Recently, the Universities Act No. 7, of 2005 repealed Act No. 12 of 1970 and all the enabling legal instruments of the constituent colleges. Prior to 1970, the University College of Dar es Salaam started in 1961 as an affiliate College of the University of London.

UDSM had only one faculty – the Faculty of Law, with 14 students. In 1963 it became a Constituent College of the University of East Africa together with Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya. Since 1961, the University of Dar es Salaam has grown in terms of student intake, academic units and programmes.

Candidates wishing to be admitted to the University of Dar es Salaam to pursue undergraduate programmes have to fulfill the general minimum entry requirements as well as the additional entry requirements specific for each academic programme.

NOTE:

  1. Applicants from countries which follow an 8-4-4 education system need to complete at least one year of study at a university in their own countries before they can be considered for admission into the University of Dar es Salaam.
  2. All direct applicants must also meet the TCU minimum entry requirement of Two Principal passes with at least a total of 4.0 points from Two A’ level subjects.

Undergraduate Bachelor Programmes – General Minimum Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to pursue a programme leading to the award of a first-degree of the University of Dar es Salaam if the candidate
has the following qualifications:

  • Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at Credit level obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) or equivalent;
    AND (Direct Applicants)
  • Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with Two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in Two Subjects defining the admission into the respective programme.

1. Login to Your Account

Use your email address as your username and the password you created during registration to log in to UDSM-OLAS.

3. Complete Your Profile (Step 1):

Select your application category (direct entry, equivalent, or foreign certificate).
Accurately enter your names as they appear on your secondary school certificates.
Provide your gender, country of citizenship, and any disability information (if applicable).

4. Pay the Application Fee (Step 2):

  • Tanzanian Applicants: The application fee is TZS 10,000/= (non-refundable). Generate a payment reference number through UDSM-OLAS and use mobile money services (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money) to complete the payment. The system will automatically update after successful payment.
  • Foreign Applicants: The application fee is USD 10. You will pay this fee upon arrival at UDSM.

5. Provide Academic Qualifications

  1. Direct Entry (O-Level and A-Level results from NECTA): Select your examination level (O-Level or A-Level), enter your index number and year of completion, and click “Add Sitting.” Repeat this for all relevant sittings.
  2. Equivalent Qualifications (O-Level results and a Diploma): Provide your O-Level details as above. Upload your Diploma certificates in PDF format.
  3. Foreign Certificate Holders: Obtain an equivalence number from NECTA (National Examinations Council of Tanzania) and enter it along with the year of completion.

6. Choose Your Programs

You can select a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of fifteen (15) programs you’re interested in.
